    Memories and Tributes

  • Vice Adm. Carol C. Smith Jr., commander of the Navy's air forces in the Atlantic, died Friday, October 14, 1983, apparently of cardiac arrest, while jogging in front of Connecticut House, his home on Admiral's Row at Norfolk Naval Station. He was 53 years old.

Admiral Smith took command of the Atlantic Fleet's air forces on Aug. 1, 1983. He was previously director of the Navy Office of Program Appraisal on the staff of the Secretary of the Navy. A native of Montgomery, Ala., Admiral Smith graduated from the United States Naval Academy in June 1952.

Burial with military honors was held in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, Virginia Beach. Admiral Smith is survived by his wife, Sara Jane, and four children.

  • CC Smith was a lieutenant in 1957 when detached on the USS Saratoga (Det. 43-57). In 1975 I found him again as the skipper of the USS Enterprise when she pulled into Singapore while I was living there. Then he went on to become an admiral. From: Daryl Phillippi PH1.
